Workplace Sequence, initiated by the artists Jooyoung Lee and Sascha Pohle, is a self-organized exhibition taking place in Seoul. Workplace Sequence is a sister project of Home Sequence www.homesequence.net organized by Sascha Pohle and Tao G. Vrhovec Sambolec in Amsterdam, in 2018 and 2019 until interrupted by the pandemic. While Home Sequence exclusively took place in the private homes of the participating artists, Workplace Sequence revises the exhibition concept with a similar structure, but with a focus on artists’ workplaces, whether they be an artist's studio, office, or home.
In Workplace Sequence artists temporarily transform their workplaces into exhibition spaces. They are then assigned to invite another artist to take part in the exhibition (either showing together or each in their own place).
Workplace Sequence is self-organized without the support of public funds, and it does not follow a theme or a central curatorial concept. Instead, it inverts the role of the artist as a public host in semi-private settings opening space for works in progress, new or existing works, and giving them another type of visibility and discussion. We regard utilizing the spaces in which we work and reside, and the act of joining forces with other artists, as an efficient possibility to expand our social relations on the basis of shared hospitality.
Workplace Sequence performs hospitality and solidarity across different generations of artists by sharing private spaces that are the incubators of art, which in itself aims toward public viewing and communicating. It is a gesture that addresses the politics of space and representation as a means of forming an open network through the city. Workplace Sequence aims for a horizontally growing neighborhood by invitations that are each time passed on from artist to artist. We see such an exhibition as providing ground for a sort of community to emerge - one that could continue on the basis of a fluid topography.

서울에서 열리는 <작업실시퀀스>는 작가 이주영과 사샤 폴레에 의해 시작되었습니다. 작가들이 자체적으로 기획한 전시입니다. <작업실 시퀀스>는 사샤 폴레와 타오 G 베로베츠 삼볼레츠에 의해 기획된 전시 프로젝트 <홈 시퀀스 Home Sequence> www.homesequence.net 에서 출발한 시스터 프로젝트이고, 팬데믹으로 중단되기 이전까지 암스테르담에서 정기적으로 진행되었습니다(2018-2019). <홈 시퀀스>가 전적으로 참여 작가들이 살고 있는 집에서 진행되었다면 유사한 구조 아래 전시 개념이 변경된 <작업실 시퀀스>에서는 작가들의 작업실, 사무실 혹은 집일 수 있는 작업 현장에 집중합니다.
<작업실 시퀀스>에서 작가들은 일시적으로 작업실을 전시 공간으로 변형할 것을 요청받습니다. 나아가 다른 작가를 초대하여 전시에 참여하도록 합니다 (다른 작가와 함께 전시할 수도 있고 또는 각자의 장소에서 전시할 수도 있습니다 ). 자세한 초대 절차는 아래 내용을 참조하시기 바랍니다.
<작업실 시퀀스>는 공공 기관의 지원없이 작가들에 의해 자체적으로 기획되며 특정 주제나 큐레이토리얼 개념을 중심에 두고 있지 않습니다. 현재 진행 중인 작업이나 새로운 작업 혹은 기존 작업을 ‘세미 프라이빗’ 설정에서 공간을 개방하게 됩니다. 여기서 공적 주최자로서 예술가의 역할은 전환되어 다른 유형의 가시성과 토론을 제안합니다. 우리는 일하거나 혹은 거주하는 공간을 활용하고 다른 예술가들과 힘을 합치고 공유하는 환대를 바탕으로 사회적 관계를 확장할 수 있다고 생각합니다.
따라서 <작업실 시퀀스>는 대중의 관람과 소통을 지향하는 예술의 인큐베이터인 사적 공간을 공유함으로써 다양한 세대의 예술가들과 함께 환대와 연대를 수행합니다. 또한 <작업실 시퀀스>는 도시를 통해 열린 네트워크를 형성하기 위한 수단으로 공간과 재현의 정치를 다루는 제스처입니다. <작업실 시퀀스>는 작가에서 작가로 매번 전달되는 초대장을 통해 수평적으로 성장하는 이웃을 목표로 합니다. 우리는 이러한 유형의 전시가 공동체가 출현할 수 있는 기반을 제공한다고 생각합니다. 이러한 공동체는 예술가들 간의 유동적인 지형을 바탕으로 계속될 수 있습니다.
